John Beaton designed Balmoral dairy and dairy cottage and J & W Smith revised the drawings and advertised for contractors. Beaton began his career as a mason and was Stuart's foreman at the building of Balmoral Castle from 1853. When Prince Albert took over the contract he took Beaton into his service as Clerk of Works, which office he retained for 27 years until he retired in 1882. After retirement he lived at 58 Watson Street, Aberdeen. He died on 5 March 1892. He was survived by one daughter.
