Memorial cross, erected in 1900-01 by the Duke's mother, Queen Victoria, in the short interval between the death of her son in 1900 and her own demise. It is a granite Celtic Cross memorial to Alfred Ernest, Duke of Saxe-Coburg Gotha and Duke of Edinburgh. There is a battered pedestal with an inscription and cross above, carved with Celtic guilloche, and sited in an enclosure fenced with fine, wrought-iron hoop railings. It is a partner memorial of the Monument to Princess Alice, the Duke's sister (NO29SW0046), and was designed before the Celtic cross became a ubiquitous choice for memorials after the First World War.
