Site of souterrain (Wainwright's 'Westhall II'). When describing the souterrain noted under NO43NE0008, Jervise writes: 'Possibly there had been some other weems in the locality, as a great many upright flag-stones were trenched out of the ground, when preparing to build another house or (possibly on) the same property, some years ago'. Wainwright speculated that 'This may perhaps justify the plotting of a second souterrain at Westhall, especially as the faint local tradition would place the only remembered souterrain further south than NO43NE0008. Examination of deeds, etc. prove that only two houses were built (at NO 4564 3538 and NO 4564 3527) before 1869. Both were built in 1857, and this is probably the date when this souterrain was discovered. It is not certain which of the two houses marks the site, but there is a strong probability that it is Kerryston House, at NO 4564 3527. Several large slabs survive at Westhall farm, and they are said to have been found when this house was built'.
