Site of the Forfar Market Cross, built in 1684 by Alexander Adam of Glamis, replacing an earlier market cross. According to Reid (1902), the earlier cross is first recorded in 1491, with various mentions of it during the 16th century, and it was demolished in 1683. After the construction of the town hall (NO45SE0094) in 1785, the current market cross became a nuisance to traffic, and it was transferred to its current location on Castle Hill (NO45SE0019) in 1799. A 19th century source mentions the site of the cross was marked by a cross carved in a paving stone, and the 1st and 2nd edition OS maps mark the location as the site of a cross. Current maps no longer show the site of the cross.
