Period Notes |
There may have been an early motte on the site, but a castle is there in 1303 when it was captured by Edward I. It is in use again in the 15th century. It is given to Thomas Erskine in 1527, who extended it by 1541. Repair and remodelling work was done in 1691, with more major reconstruction in 1696. The North-West wing was remodelled or rebuilt between 1702 and 1711, at which time the ditch and moat was probably also filled. The North wing was rebuilt in 1795-7. Major reconstruction took place in 1853-63. In 1903-4, there was some major internal remodelling. The castle was listed on 11/06/1971.
