Details A desk-based assessment of the part of the suburbs of Arbroath was undertaken in April 2006 by SUAT. They recorded that the site was part of the former Wellgate Foundry (see NO64SW0120 and NO64SW0122) and had previously been the site of several blocks of housing, the earliest of which was on the south-west corner of the junction between the current streets of Stobcross and Cairnie Street and is shown on Ainslie's map of 1874. The housing then develops throughout the 19th century, but much of it was removed and the site used as the twentieth century extension to the foundry. The site is to be redeveloped for retail and related car parking.
