Site of Rossie Castle and earlier mansion house. No trace remains of the old mansion of Rossie, which, according to the antiquary Warden, was extant in 1684-5, which stood a little to the west of Rossie Castle (NO 6970 5592). It was removed when the castle was built in 1800. When visited by the OS in 1958, Rossie Castle itself had been demolished and was a heap of rubble, but the remaining stables, although early 19th century, incorporate earlier fragments and there is also a late 18th century icehouse. An archaeological evaluation was carried out in July 2017 by AOC Archaeology prior to proposed development. Four evaluation trenches were excavated, covering 7% of the site. Brick and sandstone foundation walls, overlain in places by a large amount of demolition rubble was recorded. These features likely represent the remains of Rossie Castle.
