Railway station still in use. An intermediate station on the Edinburgh-Dundee-Kinnaber Junction line of the former North British Rly was opened on 1 May 1883. It was built on part of the tidal estuary of the Montrose Basin. The 2nd edition OS map shows that it had a series of sidings and engine sheds to the north west, where there was also a turntable. To the south and east lay a goods yard with goods shed. This and some of the sidings which served it still survive, but all the other features do not. In 1974 there was a crane in the goods yard, it is unknown whether this survives. To the south of the station is the Montrose South Signal Box, depicted on the OS 2nd edition map, closed in 2010.
