An archaeological evaluation that opened seven trial trenches by machine was undertaken by SUAT Ltd in August 2000 ahead of development for housing at the former Chapel Works (NO75NW0084). No features or artefacts were found that predated the early 19th century. In general clean, wind-blown sand deposits with a depth of over 0.5m existed over most of the site. Above this was a layer of garden soil which contained 19th/20th century ceramic remains, in places this layer was cut by pits and service trenches. In trench 2 (at the west of the site, near Eastern Road) a thin layer of clay covered an early 19th century occupation layer, and a foundation trench for an east-west rubble wall was found. In other trenches there was further evidence of demolition activity through deposits containing rubble and brick, as well as deposits containing slag and burnt material which may represent the debris of industrial processes. There were also rubble built and brick walls associated with a recently demolished structure on the site discovered in Trench 1 at the northwest of the site. Evidence for former ponds, trackways and industrial processes were also discovered.
