Details A watching brief was carried out by MAS between January and February 2023 on the excavation of five trenches during ground works to examine and repair drainage around the south, north, and west facades of the 16th century tower (NO79NW0005). Trench 1, south of the tower, exposed rough cobbling and a kerb stone probably relating to an 18th century pathway around the south side of the castle. Unstructured stones recorded in trench 2, on the south lawn, are probably part of the 18th century levelling of the landscape. At the west end of trench 4 a 19th century well or cistern and part of a pump was uncovered. No other archaeological features or artefacts were recorded.
