Leading light, fixed red and green, built in 1842 designed by harbour engineer James Abernethy. Construction of the North Pier and South Breakwater at the entrance to Aberdeen harbour restricted the width of the navigation channel necessitating a navigational aid to vessels entering the harbour. The two leading lights were constructed of cast-iron in the form of lighthouses about 11.6m high, and octagonal in cross section. Externally the castings are detailed to simulate local granite ashlar masonry: internally they show the typical bolter flange details associated with cast-iron tunnel linings. A lighthouse is depicted on the OS 1st edition map. Still in use as a working guidance beacon. See NJ90NE0019 for East Leading Light.
