Details Survey work and excavation on a terrace of 17th and 18th century housing behind the north side of Castlegate was carried out by Aberdeen City Council Archaeological Unit in 1985. The terrace was originally constructed circa 1650 and substantially rebuilt circa 1750. Further rebuilding at the southern end of the terrace took place circa 1830. Documentary evidence shows that the whole terrace was being rented for multi-tenancy occupancy by the mid 19th century. Excavation produced a useful sequence of post medieval material, including wasters and kiln furniture from a local slipware kiln in the mid 19th century. A good range of other finds, including clay pipes, coins and pottery, highlighted the connections enjoyed by Aberdeen with the Low Countries in the 16th and 17th centuries. The finds from this site are in the collections of Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museums.
