Details Probable site of the Girth or Sanctuary Cross, which according to the OS Name Book stood on the Bishop's doevcot green. It has been suggested that a cross head in St Machar's Cathedral (NJ90NW0585) may be the head of this cross. The cross may have been in existence by the early 13th century when the special rights of sanctuary at Aberdeen are mentioned in a number of charters. The cross is mentioned specifically in a deed of 1498.
