Details A trial trenching evaluation was carried out by Headland Archaeology in October 2006 on the site of the old Megabowl in advance of housing development. This recorded a sequence of loch deposits probably of late Pleistocene date, which were cut into by 19th century cellars or overlain by two successive buried soils. The lower of these soil horizons probably reflects use of the infilled loch as open land, the upper soils the formation of rapidly accumulating urban soil. The cellars of the 19th century tenement buildings along St Andrews Street had been backfilled with rubble from their demolition. A second phase of work in July 2007 comprised four geoarchaeological exposures created by the demolition of the former bowling alley building. A single sequence of 18th to 19th century dump and levelling deposits was recorded. Elsewhere the construction of the bowling alley in the 1960s had removed all preceding deposits down to the mineral loch deposits.
