Details Site of a poorhouse, later used as barracks. The poorhouse is depicted on the OS 1st and 2nd edition maps, named Old Machar Poorhouse on the 1st edition and West Poorhouse on the 2nd edition map. It was designed in 1853 by William Henderson to accommodate 200 paupers, and replaced a smaller building in use from 1848. The buildings were acquired by the Territorial Force Association after 1908 and converted into a barracks. Various units were based there during World War I and II and the barracks also acted as a drill hall. In 1914 it was in use as the base for No. 1 Company, North Scottish Royal Garrison Artillery - Defended Ports, and for 3 Company Highland Division Transport and Supply Column, Army Service Corps. It was also the HQ and base for 'A' to 'C' Companies, 1 and 2 Highland Division Field Ambulances, RAMC. The buildings were demolished some time after World War II.
