Remains of mansion house, built in 1821 by Mrs Lovat Fraser for 'Mormond Tam' Fraser. It replaced the 17th Century palace of Strichen which had formerly occupied the site. It is a large elegant house in the Grecian style built of local granite and housing 45 rooms. In the mid 19th century the estate came into the possession of the Baird family, of the Gartsherrie Iron Works. An English syndicate acquired the house and estate in 1926, and attempted (unsuccessfully) to run it as a Hydro resort. It housed troops during the Second World War, and in 1947 the house and estate were sold to John Bisset and Sons Ltd, Timber Merchants. Now a roofless granite shell.
