Period Notes

Period Notes Built probably late 12thC; younger son of Earl of Fife became Earl of Atholl in 1264. By 1400 L-plan tower was begun as replacement and then burnt by Earl of Moray. January 1496 James IV attended marriage here between Henry VII and Lady Catherine. By 1556 a grand palace block had been created on south side of courtyard; postern gate mentioned in 1562; palace completed by 1606. Inscription framing windows date 1599-1602. Further work carried out in 1640s; thereafter declined. Previous notes state the dates 1376; 1452 without explanation, and state building in 1595, 1617, 1643.
