Period Notes

Period Notes A sample of hulled barley from Trench 1 (Context 16) - hearth below the lime kiln - was radiocarbon dated to 169+/-29 (which equals 1661 AD - 1954 AD at 2 sigma). This calibrated date was calculated using OxCal 4.2. The sample reference is SUERC-44681 (GU29635). This indicates the structure is most likely post-medieval. Radiocarbon dating from excavation 2013: SUERC-48146 (GU31496) sample of charred cereal grain, hulled barley: 717+/- 30 BP (calibrated 1247 -1384 AD, calculated using OxCal 4.2 21/10/13); SUERC-48147 (GU31497) sample of Scot's pine charcoal; 1318+/-30 BP (calibrated 653 AD - 768 AD, calculated using OxCal 4.2 04/10/13); SUERC-48148 (GU31498) sample of charred cereal grain, barley - 1250+/-30 BP (calibrated 676 AD - 870 AD, calculated using OxCal 4.2 04/10/13); SUERC-48149 (GU31499) sample of charred cereal grain, barley - 1215 +/- 30 BP (calibrated 694 AD - 889 AD, calculated using OxCal 4.2 04/10/13)
