Details Market cross which stands on the Plain Stones outside the Townhouse in Banff. It has a slender octagonal shaft with interlace-like carving, perhaps made in the early 17th century. The head of the cross is of much older date carved in round, a cross with figure in front (possibly that of Christ) flanked by two standing figures. Original site was at NJ 6896 6397 - the intersection of Strait Path, Carmelite Street and Low Street. It is first mentioned in 1543 but in 1768 it was removed and set up on a dovecot belonging to the Earl of Fife in a field off Sandyhill Road (NJ66SE0030). It was moved to present position in 1900. Before that the capital sat on top of a dovecot at NJ682 632. The original cross finial and shaft are held by Aberdeenshire Council's Conservation Materials Store pending relocation to Banff museum.
