Site Condition Destroyed
Details Site of alleged Templar's House, said to have stood until circa 1840, and described as being nearly ruinous in 1842. The vaults of this building were supposedly finally removed during the second half of the 19th century. It was named as Castle Rainy, having belonged at one time to a family named Rainie. The Town Hall was later built on the site. An excavation was carried out prior to the addition of an extension at 10 Castle Street. Two trenches were dug and cleaned by hand. Trench 1 revealed two walls, at right angles to each other, of stone construction with yellow lime/clay mortar. It was thought that these walls dated to the 1920s-1930s, when the building was used as a cinema. The fill of the trench was fine black topsoil and broken crockery, none of which dated earlier than the late 19th or early 20th century. Trench 2 revealed a wall running at right angles to the upstanding boundary wall. It was constructed of the same materials as the boundary wall, red sandstone and dry lime and clay mortar, and abutts the standing wall but does not tie into the structure. It is thought that the wall dates to the 1920s- 1930s and is an attempt to stabilise the boundary wall. No finds earlier than the late 19th or early 20th century were recovered.
