Details Manor house built in the 17th century, additions of 1867 since removed, and reconstructed 1978-9. The old part of the house consists of a simple oblong block dating from the first half of the 17th century, with stair outshot (reconstructed 1867 and 1978) at the back. Two storeys and attic in height, to which a large modern mansion has been attached. A heraldic panel in the west gable bears the date '1635'. Monboddo was Barclay property from the 13th century onwards, but by 1593 the laird was James Strachan. Soon afterwards it passed to the Irvines, whose coat-of-arms is on the panel, and then the Burnetts.
