Details Episcopal Church, still in ecclesiastical use. It was built in 1903-5, replacing a classical church of 1797 that was destroyed by fire (NO35SE0102). It is the only complete church in Scotland designed by Sir J. Ninian Comper. It is a curvilinear gothic church, with a four-bay nave, a north aisle, a west battlemented tower, a transeptal south porch and an aisle-less two-bay chancel. There is very finely detailed, high quality furnishing. Stained glass added over subsequent years, mainly by Comper, including a memorial window to his father. There is also a stained glass window added by William Wilson. The funeral service of Sir J. M. Barrie took place here in 1937. Barrie, born in Kirriemuir in 1860 (NO35SE0104), died of pneumonia in London in 1937. As a baronet, his funeral service could have taken place at Westminster Abbey. Instead it was held at St Mary's Episcopal Church in Kirriemuir. At his request, Barrie was buried in the family burial plot in Kirriemuir Cemetery (NO35SE0105) and his name was added below the names of those who had gone before him. Photographic recording of the church was carried out in April 2017.
