The cottage was a favourite haunt of Edward Wilson, the chief scientist, surgeon and artist on the Captain Scott's Terra Nova expedition to the South Pole. Wilson was joined at the cottage by Scott and a number of occasions, part of the time being spent in planning the expedition, going over the finer details and testing some of the equipment. A memorial cairn to Scott and Wilson stands further west alongside the road (NO36SE0004).
