Remains of a castle. Balinshoe (pronounced 'Benshee') Castle is one of the type of small towers, measuring circa 8.33 m x 6.8 m One of three small 'castles' in the vicinity (with Fletcherfield, now a farmstead at circa NO 403 522, and Cossans, NO34NE0013), part of the Glamis estate, possibly inhabited by richer tenants or younger sons. It is now roofless and has been ruinous since the 19th century. The tower was three storeys high, unvaulted, with wooden floors and just one apartment on each floor. On the northeast corner is the entrance and there was a (now demolished) projecting turnpike tower, but whether it was round or square is not known. On the southwest angle a corbelled circular turret accessed from the attic. The shot holes under the windows and other features show that it belonged to the period 1542-1700. There are two fireplaces, one on the first floor, the other in the attic, there is no trace of a kitchen and there probably was a detached kitchen block such as at the similar small tower at Murroes. To the south is an enclosure (NO45SW0090) which may be contemporary to the tower. The ruin was in a dilapidated condition when visited by the OS in 1958.
