Castle, still in use, within a designed landscape (NO64NE0006). It was originally a 15th century tower house, and the castle was remodelled and extended in the late-16th century or early-17th century. The buildings to the north-west of the castle are dated 1773. Further alterations were made in 1891-2 by Sir R. Rowand Anderson, architect. It was the home of Cardinal Beaton in the mid-16th century. The south-west block appears to be from the original tower house, and it was originally higher than it is now. It is depicted on the 1st edition OS map as an irregular building with a courtyard to the north, containing a rectangular building in the north-east corner and a U-plan building to the north-west. A pump is also depicted by the castle. There is a walled garden to the east (NO64NE0098), connected to the castle with a wall. Current maps show the rectangular building to the north-east of the castle has been removed. The walls of the courtyard by the house contain gunloops and a shot hole, and the U-plan outbuilding to the north-west is the block dated 1773. There is a mounting block (louping on stane) by the outer courtyard entrance, which has a much defaced heraldic pediment built in.
