Primary school, part of which was formerly Anderson's Institution as depicted on OS 1st and 2nd edition maps. The original building (the north end of the present school, facing the High Street was designed by William Robertson, constructed in 1823, remodelled in 1881 and restored in 1971-73. It has a Classical facade with central Gibbsian steeple, and is built of polished ashlar with a coursed rubble side elevation. It is of a single storey with a 5-bay facade to the High Street. The central three bays are advanced and pedimented with a central door and flanking windows with multi pane glazing set in round-arched panels, approached by shallow flight of steps. The central steeple has a square plinth, clock stage with angle pilasters, an octagonal stage above with louvred openings, and a slender faceted spire and weather vane. The gatepiers, which may have been reused from elsewhere are of early 19th century date, comprising fluted stone piers on square bases with flat capitals supporting draped urns. They support a pair of cast-iron gates and the property is bounded by a low stone wall with cast-iron spearhead railings. The Institution was endowed by Jonathan Anderson of Glasgow for the education of children from Forres, Rafford and Kinloss. The school building facing south street dates from 1926. See NJ05NW0532 for watching brief during drainage works in the north side of the school grounds.
