A watching brief was carried out by CFA Archaeology in September 2012 during groundworks for the new substation over an area of 1.06 ha. Desk-based assessment had identified that the site lay within a field system of probable prehistoric date (NJ04NW0010), and walkover survey by ASH in 2011 and CFA in 2012 had recorded a number of cairns immediately west and northwest of the substation footprint, although no features had been recorded within it. A single cairn identified during the watching brief at NJ 04211 47085 to the west of the main area of construction, was probably one of those located during an earlier walkover survey. It measures 7 m by 5 m, standing to 0.6 m high, comprising stones up to 0.4 m by 0.4 m within a matrix of black peat. It is probably associated with the field system and of likely prehistoric date.
