Details Glenlivet Distillery was founded in 1824, and was relocated to its present site in 1858 by George Smith. The distillery was moved here from Drummin, to the South-West (NJ12NE0021), and was at first known as Drummin-Glenlivet. Much of the complex seen today is modern, but two three-bay and one four-bay range of bonded stores that were built in the late-19th century survive, alongside the two-storey office block of similar date. The bonded stores, among the oldest to survive in Scotland, are one-storey with attic. They consist of two ranges of four, one to the South and one to the North. At the South range, each bay of the upper floor is lit by unusual central pointed Gothic-style windows, flanked on each side by a bullseye window, all cast-iron framed. The earliest store has a rounded gable, and the other three (dated 1880) to the North are identical, but without the rounded gable. There is a four-bay side elevation facing North, with multi pane iron-framed windows. The roofs are constructed from corrugated iron, and are part replaced by asbestos. The North range is similar to the 1880 South range, and probably dates from the 1880s. However the buildings are two-storey, with four bays. There is access to the first floor at the South end by a ramp leading to wooden platforms, which are supported on cast-iron and timber columns, and there are rails laid on the ramp for moving barrels. The North range has five-bay side elevation. The two-storey offices have a dry dash finish and a double gabled North elevation. The first section to the left was built in circa 1880, and extended in circa 1924. The 1880 block has a pair of narrow windows on each floor. The 1924 block has a round-arched doorway with a moulded and keystoned architrave to the left, bipartite to the right and three irregularly placed sash and case windows at the first floor. All windows bar one have four-pane cash and case windows. The adjoining production buildings to the South and West are much altered, and not included in the HES listing. The interior is largely panelled in pitch pine, and some matchboarding that is now painted. The warehouses consist of two ranges, constructed from flagstone coursed rubble with dry-rendered fronts. They probably date from circa 1858-80. There were originally three ranges, but the centre block was demolished. The visitor centre was probably built as a malt barn in circa 1870. It is a two-storey five-bay building, constructed of coursed flagstone rubble with irregularly placed buttresses between bays. It has timber gables and a corrugated-iron roof. It was adapted as a visitor centre in circa 1980, when two doors and a forestair was built at the rear, the windows were altered and ventilators inserted. The distillery workers' houses were added to the South of the main complex in the late-19th century, and are shown on the second edition OS map onward. The house and farmstead to the North (NJ12NE0099) belonged to George Smith when he moved to distillery to this location.
