Village as depicted on the OS 1st and 2nd edition maps. The village grew up at the terminus of the Vale of Alford railway opened in 1859. The single main street is little changed from the 19th century. The 1st edition shows two banks (NJ51NE0206) near the west end of the village, a market stance, hotel, two saw mills, and, near the east end, an infants school. There had been significant additions by the time of the 2nd edition map in particular on the south side of the now A944, including a Free Church (NJ51NE0084) and public hall, but also St Andrews Church (NJ51NE0087) to the northwest.
