Remains of a section of the Aberdeenshire canal, now Scheduled. This is one of several locations in Aberdeen where canal remains survive, because the Great North of Scotland Railway which superseded it, took a different line (see also NJ81NW0029 and NJ81NE0047). North of Beidleston farm, heading north, part of the road to Woodlands Croft occupies the site of the tow path. South east of the tow path the canal base remains. The construction of this part of the canal would have involved removing part of the hillside and using the additional material to form an embankment on the slope. The road diverges from the tow path and heads east up a steep climb to the croft. The tow path continues north until it reaches the site of the railway where the canal has been cut by the railway. Opened in 1805, the Aberdeenshire canal was constructed between 1796 and 1801 and ran from Waterloo Quay to Port Elphinstone near Inverurie. The canal was then overlain in places by the Great North of Scotland railway, which bought the canal in 1854.
