Details A watching brief and excavation was carried out by Aberdeen City Council Archaeological Unit in July 2009 during resurfacing works in the quadrangle of Robert Gordon's College (NJ90NW0375) recorded wall foundations, one of which was lined with vertically set stone roof tiles which had presumably been thrown down from the roof during demolition. Finds recovered included glazed ceramic floor tiles, window glass, medieval pottery and a small pit filled with disarticulated human bones. This is probably the remains of the Blackfriars (Dominican) friary which occupied the site from the 13th Century (NJ90NW0041). Newspaper accounts of the 18th and 19th centuries detail previous finds of walls, lead piping and human remains.
