Details Gatepiers, dated 1816 and probably built by John Smith, flanking the south entrance to Pitfour House (NJ94NE0039). The centre piers have gone, but the outer piers survive. They are broad, circular, Roman-Doric type piers with no bases and round abaci surmounted by urns. In the east screen wall between Roman-Doric pilasters is a Memorial tablet to William Pitt the younger and Henry Dundas, Viscount Melville. The inscription in Latin translates as 'To the memory of William Pitt and Henry Dundas, Viscount Melville. Men of ancient virtue. This tribute, from the most durable native granite - than which their fame shall be more lasting - is given by James Ferguson of Pitfour, in the year of Salvation, 1816'. James Ferguson FRSE (25 May 1735 - 6 September 1820) was the 3rd Laird of Pitfour, and was MP for Banffshire from 1789 - 1790, and MP for Aberdeenshire from 1790 until his death in 1820.
