The old fishing village of Collieston, known as the Low Town, lies on the lower slopes clustered round the harbour. In the mid 19th century there were 250 people employed here in connection with fishing. The village's prosperity declined after 1880 as larger boast sailed from the few major harbours. In September 1930, T. E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia), calling himself Aircraftsman Shaw, rented the cottage at 15 The Cliff (NK02NW0126) from the owners, Mr and Mrs Adam Ross, and spent a holiday in Collieston along with two ex-service friends, Jock and Jimmy. The cottage only had three rooms at the time and Lawrence described it as 'the nearest hovel to the high-tide mark'.
