Details Remains of a section of the Great North of Scotland Railway running northwest from Rothes to Elgin, depicted on the historic OS maps. It was opened to freight in 1861 and to passengers the following year. Remains of the railway embankments and hardstanding where the line had been positioned were recorded during a walkover survey by Highland Archaeology Services in November 2021 (NJ25SE0065). The remains measured roughly 7 m in width and extended outwith the embankments and cuttings. Part of the line (centred NJ2613752062) was included in walkover survey carried out in May 2022 ahead of a proposed 132kV overhead line (NJ25SE0078). Here the former line is in use as a footpath on top of a raised embankment up to 13 m wide and 3 m high.
