It was opened to freight in 1861 and to passengers the following year. Remains of the railway embankments and hardstanding where the line had been positioned were recorded during a walkover survey by Highland Archaeology Services in November 2021 (NJ25SE0065). The remains measured roughly 7 m in width and extended outwith the embankments and cuttings.
