An archaeological desk based assessment and a walkover survey was carried out by West Coast Archaeological Services in October 2020, covering an area of a proposed woodland planting and regeneration scheme, with associated developments including access tracks and fencing requirements. The walkover survey did not cover the whole of the scheme boundary, but only the four proposed planting areas within it. In the north this was centred at NJ 23554 52005 on Brylach Hill, in the southeast it was centred at NJ 24832 51355 on Stony Hill, in the south it was centred at NJ 24752 50902 along each side of the Back Burn and in the southwest it was centred at NJ 24067 50275 on Bracken Noits. The scheme boundary included the archaeological features of Stony Hill prehistoric hut circles and field system (NJ25SW0004), Stony Hill kerbed cairn (NJ25SW0003), Burnkirk croft and enclosure (NJ25SE0006), boundary marker cairns, known as Shepherd's Cairns, of Bracken Noits (NJ25SW0031, NJ25SW0032, NJ25SW0033) and Bruach Hill (NJ24NW0024), boundary drystone walls (NJ25SE0060), grouse-butts (NJ25SW0051, NJ25SW0052), and Bracken Noits prehistoric field system (NJ25SW0053) and hut circle (NJ25SW0054).
