Details Former mill complex, depicted on historic mapping, parts of which survive today. Depicted on the 1st edition OS map as West Balmuir Mill (plash) at the west end of the site with Balmuir Mill (Flour) at the east end of the site, with mill leads, dams, sluices, drying ground and various mill buildings. By the 2nd edition OS map, the west area of the site is named as Balmuir Bleachfield, with substantial buildings added to the north and south of the original plash mill building. The mill is shown as disused on the 3rd edition OS map of circa 1900-1949. Parts of the lade network survive, as well as the former mill house (Balmuir House NO33SE0006), the L-plan plash mill (NO33SE0009, category B-listed), a coach house (NO33SE0007), lodge (NO33SE0022) and the former corn mill house at the east end of the site (at circa NO 3996 3414). To the west was another large mill complex (Harestone / Harestane, at circa NO 39414152) now within Dundee City Council local authority boundary. In the OS Name Book for Forfar (vol 67, 1857-1861), the plash mill is described as being the property of '- Webster Esq', worked by Mr Murdoch. The flour mill is also shown owned by Webster Esq, as is Harestone mill (adjacent to the west). Plash mills were used in the bleaching process for textile production (linen, jute).
