Details Designed landscape around Murlingen House (NO56SE0123). To the South of the house is a Lodge (NO 59060 62448) and gates (NO56SE0125). On the 1st edition OS map (1862), there is a well shown by the lodge. There is also a steading shown, marked as Offices, to the North-East of the house. It is shown as an E-plan steading, oriented roughly East/West, with three wings projecting North. There is a horse mill shown to the East, and a wing joining the ends of the two Eastern projecting wings, forming an enclosed court. There is another rectangular building shown to the North of the steading, and there are three more small outbuildings to the North-East of the steading and another one to the West. A burn coming towards the mansion from the North-East is lined by trees, and is shown as having plague huts within it, although the exact location of them is not clear. A walled garden shown to the East of the steading has been placed so the burn runs through the centre of it. On the 2nd edition OS map (1901), the well is no longer shown by the lodge to the South. The main change to the landscape between 1862 and 1901 is the creation of a large pond to the South of Murlingden House (NO 59127 62640), with a sluice at the North-East. The steading to the North-East of the house is now shown as being filled in, forming a large rectangular-plan steading, with the horse mill still attached. To the North-East of the steading, kennels are now shown (NO 59184 62820). The rectangular building to the North of the steading is now shown as L-plan. The walled garden is now shown as having a greenhouse against the Northern wall, and a building against the outside of the Western wall. There is a larger greenhouse shown on the path between the house and walled garden. A well is now shown within the trees to the North-East (NO 59271 62846), but the plague huts are no longer recorded. A band of trees is shown as having been planted to the North, and a second pond has been added with a sluice to the South, joining this new band of trees to the North and the existing trees lining the burn (NO 59308 62975). In a field to the North of the steading a windmill (pumping) is shown (NO 59161 62913). On the 1922 revised 2nd edition OS map, a water tower has been added to the North of Murlingen House (NO 59122 62779), and the pond to the North-East has since gone. Presently, the steading to the North-East has been demolished, with only a small rectangular building remaining on the site. The kennels remain, and the now L-plan building shown to the North of the steading since the 1st edition OS map also remains as a garden cottage. The windmill shown to the North of the steading has gone. A new pond, further to the East than the short-lived pond at NO 59308 62975 has been added (NO 59514 63100). A perforated stone was found to the South-West of the house (NO56SE0011).
